Bank of England interest-rate change
On the 4th of December 2008, the Bank of England again reduced their interest rate (often referred to as the 'base rate'), to the lowest level since November 1951.

But, what does that mean for customers?

Accessibility

We have built this website to be accessible to as many people as possible - including people with sight, hearing, movement or learning difficulties and those using less common browsers, different computer systems, PDAs and mobile phones.

Browsing

All the pages of this website are written to the XHTML 1.0 Transitional standard, use cascading style sheets for presentation, and aim to meet the 'AA' conformance level of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This means you should be able to see this website on all modern browsers, regardless of platform or device. We have used a popular and widely available assistive browsing application called Jaws 9.0 to ensure that partially sighted people using a screen reader can read the website.

Some older browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer 4/5.5 and Netscape 4) do not fully comply with these web standards. A few of our visitors still use these browsers so will not experience the site as we have intended. They will be able to read the pages and navigate the site, but the site will look basic in comparison.

Text size

You can change the size of the text by using the text size buttons in the top right-hand corner of the page.

Users of Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher can change the size of text on this website by selecting View, Text Size from the main menu at the top of the browser window. Select from Largest, Larger, Medium, Smaller and Smallest.

If you use Mozilla Firefox, you can change the size of text on this website by selecting View, Text Size and then Increase, Decrease or Normal. If you prefer to use a keyboard short cut then set the focus on the page, hold down CTRL and press + to increase font size, or hold down CTRL and press - to decrease it. To return the size of text to normal hold down CTRL and press zero.

Users of Safari version 2 or higher on the Mac can change the size of text on this website by selecting View and then Make Text Bigger, Make Text Smaller or Make Text Normal Size. If you prefer to use a keyboard short cut then set the focus on the page, hold down the COMMAND key and press + to increase font size, or hold down the COMMAND key and press - to decrease text size. To return the size of text to normal hold down the COMMAND key and press zero.

This site uses some innovative technologies to make it a better experience for users. For example, the 'tag cloud' of words on the right-hand side of the page provides a quick route into the content. The intelligent pop-ups provide a user-friendly way of viewing articles on other websites from this site. If you have javascript turned off, or if you require increased accessibility, alternative mechanisms are available.

Videos

We have provided a closed captioned (subtitled) version of the videos, to let people with hearing difficulties access them, or people working in offices who can't hear or can't use the PC speakers without disturbing others.

We have provided a text-based version of the script in PDF and Word format for people who can't or won't install the players for any reason.

How to read PDF files

This site provides 'portable document format' (PDF) files and word documents as an alternative to videos. To view these documents you will need Adobe Reader software, or Microsoft viewer if Microsoft Word is not already installed on the computer. We have provided the links to Adobe Reader and Microsoft Viewer on the pages to download the software free of charge if necessary.
